Who we are

About Red Rock Harbor

Red Rock Harbor is an independent editorial website about camping and outdoor gear for American campers, paddlers and picnickers. We publish practical, plain-English guides on seven subjects: camping pillows, sleeping pads and camping mattresses, dry bags and waterproof bags, camping tables, picnic and outdoor blankets, folding camp chairs, and hammocks with stands. Alongside the guides we offer a free sleeping pad R-value picker, with a hammock hang-angle check, that turns your conditions into simple recommendations.

Why this site exists

Outdoor gear advice online tends to arrive in two forms: gear lists with no reasoning, and reviews with no context. Neither helps when you are shivering on an inflatable pad, watching a "waterproof" bag leak at the seam or wondering whether the spot you picked is even legal to camp in. We write for the moment before and after you buy: what to measure, what to check, what can go wrong and how to care for the gear so it lasts.

What we cover

  • Sleep gear: pillows, pads and mattresses, with insulation ratings, sizes, comfort and care.
  • Waterproofing and carrying: dry bags and waterproof bags, closures, materials and how they fail.
  • Camp comfort: tables, chairs, blankets and hammocks, with stability, weight, capacity and safe setup.
  • Where and how to camp: public-land basics, Leave No Trace and desert and red-rock country.

We write in American English, with U.S. measurements and U.S. conditions in mind, from northern forests to the Gulf Coast and the desert Southwest.

How we write

The Red Rock Harbor Editorial Team writes every page, and every page carries an "Updated" date. Our standards are straightforward:

  1. Facts come from published sources. Numbers and rules, such as sleeping pad insulation standards, Leave No Trace principles, hammock hanging guidance and public-land camping practices, draw on organizations such as ASTM International, the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and federal land-management agencies. Where sources or places differ, we say so.
  2. Rules of thumb are labeled. When a number is a common guideline rather than a hard standard, we describe it as one.
  3. No invented evidence. We do not publish made-up statistics, fabricated test results, fake reviews or invented experts.
  4. No brand rankings. We explain product types and how to choose between them. We do not rank named products or send you to a checkout.
  5. Plain language. We prefer short sentences, real measurements and honest trade-offs over hype.

How we are funded

Red Rock Harbor currently carries no advertising, no sponsored content and no affiliate links. If that ever changes, we will label it clearly and explain it in our Affiliate Disclosure. Editorial decisions are never influenced by a retailer or manufacturer.

Photography

Photos come from photographers on Unsplash and are credited on each page. They illustrate places, activities or a type of gear, and a product seen in a photo is not an endorsement.

Corrections and feedback

If something on the site is wrong, unclear or out of date, please tell us. Email [email protected] with the page and the sentence in question, and a source if you have one. We correct errors promptly and update the page's date. You can also suggest topics: some of our best guides began as a question from a reader.

It is not professional safety, medical or survival advice, and it does not replace the instructions that come with your gear or the rules of the land manager.
